THE MEANING OF ‘THEORY’ question, it does not force us to think about metaphysics, reality, essences, being, and the like. Unlike the evaluative question, it does not involve the tricky predicate ‘(be) good.’ Unlike the teleological question, it does not appear to require that we are clear about the nature and aims of sociology. Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical change in whole societies.
Interpretive sociology is, thus, focused on understanding the meaning that those studied give to their beliefs, values, actions, behaviors, and social relationships with people and institutions. Georg Simmel, a contemporary of Weber, is also recognized as a major developer of interpretive sociology. The Debunking Motif. As Peter L. Berger (, pp. 23–24) noted in his classic book Invitation to Sociology, “The first wisdom of sociology is this—things are not what they seem.”Social reality, he said, has “many layers of meaning,” and a goal of sociology is to help us discover these multiple meanings.

This adapted edition is produced by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing through the eLearning Support Initiative. Symbolic interactionism has roots in phenomenology, which emphasizes the subjective meaning of reality. Symbolic interactionism proposes a social theory of the self, or a looking glass self. Symbolic interactionists study meaning and communication; they tend to use qualitative methods. Oct 06, · Related Quotations “Cultures do not generally remain static.
